Summer is here and by now you've checked all the posts, blogs and commercials for fitness programs, diet plans and nutritional supplements, which promise to get you "beach ready." Now don't get me wrong, getting in great shape through consistent workouts and clean eating is what I am all about, but here are 5 Ways To Crush Your Summer you may not have considered:

STAY LOCAL. Summer is prime time for locally-grown, organic fruits and vegetables and just about everything you love is available at any farmer's market and many grocery stores. The great thing is you get to support your neighbors.

GET WET. A beach trip is always a good bet this time of year, but don't forget the pool if you want a great, low-impact workout. Or, grab some buddies and rent paddle boards or canoes for an afternoon of fitness (just leave the beer at home).

GET OUTSIDE. The days are long and the weather is warm, so there is no excuse not to tune up your bike, find a new hiking trail or get back to your running program.

EARLY TO BED, EARLY TO RISE. Sleep is a critical component of recovery and general well being, so use the early sunrise to help you get up in the morning. Maybe you can make it to the 6am boot camp or click on the Workouts tab above this blog.

WEAR OUT A PAIR OF SHOES. The long, warm days make it easier to get outside to workout, play, hang out with friends and help others. Wear out a pair of your shoes participating in a charity race, repairing bikes to be given to kids or standing in a kitchen making meals for the homeless. Crush your summer by giving back!
